The migration was very poorly tested. The holes are enormous and for me (and thus TwitKu.com) I'm not too motivated to fix it. I suspect other developers are feeling similarly. It would be better to put effort into other social networks.
Yeah, mJaiku doesn't work anymore, and I really doubt the developer is going to fix it. Why would anyone, if it's clear the service is "dying" because of all of these changes? This was just an awful move for Jaiku. And the thing is, there isn't a service that's as "good" for people who just want to have online conversations, unless we just want to start a Google Group and revert back to discussion forums. :P
Personally I think FriendFeed is just as good (better in a lot of ways) for conversations, but for whatever reason people from here aren't really warming up to it. I've seen a lot of great conversation threads that grow really quickly because the amount of traffic on FF is a lot greater than here.
It's "great" that Jaiku has gone open source, but does anyone really think that someone's going to create a bigger, better, more robust Jaiku? It sure would be nice, but I don't see it happening.
I think people also just have the attitude of "well, just go to Twitter". I installed TweetDeck yesterday, and while it helps make Twitter a little more tolerable, the plain and simple of it is that Twitter is a giant steaming pile when it comes to conversations. So I still don't see myself really using it. I'd rather just use Facebook and it's ability to comment on statuses than try to follow conversations on Twitter -- and I have no particular love for Facebook, either, so that should put into perspective how much I despise Twitter.
It really is a shame to see Jaiku dying so horribly. It was doing OK until the platform switch -- not great, but still a steady set of people and posts. Now I look at my overview page and I have maybe 5 new posts show up in an entire day...
Yeah, I thought maybe once the switch happened, at least the site would be "rock solid" and not throw up any bird pages anymore. But so much of the major functionality is gone now that it's hard for people to keep coming back. sigh
I've pretty much switched to FB, but it isn't nearly as good as Jaiku in functionality. Too bad Pownce died such an early death. I think that if it were still around, it would grab much more attention. Twitter just isn't targeted for the conversation type use, it's strictly one way. Not saying that's a bad thing. It's good in its own right.
The main reason I like Twitter is being able to see news and trends pop up before the mainstream media gets to it. I like seeing what the techie A-listers are falling all over themselves about for the moment. Also, I've subscribed to quite a few websites' tweets so it's a little bit like an RSS reader for new posts/podcasts. And I like having the option for private direct messaging. But beyond that, I don't post any elaborate comments. Sometimes I do try to post multiple tweets to discuss something, but it's annoying.

I'm so glad they migrated to the App Engine. >:P

Definately growing pains with the new Jaiku platform. I wonder if we'll ever see an update to mJaiku that supports the new API...

RSS, yes, good analogy.

I wonder if the core Jaiku devs would accept more volunteer help to keep development moving for this community.

@topgold: Well, supposedly it's open source now, so you'd think that you could. Here's the project site http://code.google.com/p/jaikuengine/
