(sigh) It makes me sad to check in here after a few days/weeks and see how empty my overview is of real convos. Why do I punish myself?

    So am I.

Funnily enough I see various people popping in to check up on the level of activity around here and then leaving immediately so they never see the other people doing exactly the same thing.

@lemonad: Yes, but a lot of your posts are in a language I don't understand, or are about the Jaiku engine stuff. I miss talking about general news topics, or getting into debates, or long convos about photography, etc. I don't see any of that anymore! A simple "good morning" ku would balloon into a tangential conversation about whatever, but now I don't even get any sort of reply to "good morning" or "good afternoon" posts. The activity just isn't the same.

The closest thing like that right now is @cybette's tripku, but there isn't much for me to comment on, just read. I need a mobile client! Or a nice desktop client like Tweetie for Mac.

Something like tweetie for Jaiku would be nice to have for sure.

@jezlyn: Yes, I keep forgetting about that. It kind of sucks being bilingual in some regards, a lose/lose situation really. It feels very strange to reply in English to Swedish threads and I feel bad about the non-Swedes that get spammed with incomprehensible messages if I reply in Swedish.

This is an issue which I think Qaiku has a pretty neat solution for.

By the way, I got a Sigma DP2 the other week — yay! :)

  • jezlyn

@lemonad: Yeah, I saw some of the pictures you took with the DP2, very awesome! That looks like a very cool pocket cam to have around... I was quite interested in the DP1 when it was announced. If I had a spare few hundred $ I'd get the DP2. :)

@Itkovian: Yes, yes, a Tweetie for Jaiku would be soo great!

Although what Jaikuengine needs is different from what Jaiku needs, which makes the whole thing trickier. Jaikuengine needs features that drives adoption of it... (or it needs Twitter to gain too many users, making, say, the necessity of federation obvious)

@jezlyn: It's a great pocket camera as long as there's proper daylight, objects stay put, and are sized appropriately for a 41mm lens. All that aside, I like it a lot :)

  • jezlyn

I forgot that the DP2 has a fixed focal length. Perhaps that was one of the reasons I ended up passing on it. However, being stuck with one focal length can force one to be more creative, or think differently about the pictures one takes. :)

It doesn't do well in low light?

@adewale: My problem is that while people may just be popping in once in a while, they don't reply to anything. No replies makes it difficult for me to want to come back.

@lemonad: While I understand that Jaikuengine needs different things from what Jaiku needs, it isn't going to make much difference if the users aren't here. A decent mobile and desktop client would go miles and miles and miles towards pushing adoption and activity back up. I'm most active on Twitter, not because I like it or think it's adequate for conversations, but because the sheer number of 3rd-party clients available for it make it a no-brainer for me to use it wherever I am, either on my laptop or more likely on my iPhone. While it is super awesome that you were able to get m.jaiku.com up and running again, the cookie issue where I have to log in just about everytime I visit is a HUGE problem, and it just can't compete with native clients that Twitter has in abundance.

Please, can't someone code up a mobile client??? Porting the original Nokia client over to iPhone and other phones would be huge. Of course, getting the original Nokia client running properly would be huge as well.

@jezlyn: late, but i'm still here but i agree, the community is lost some times a few of still "talk" around here but its not the same thing anymore. and even though i say it would raise again, i have my doubts now. I like identica.. its not jaiku, not even close. but since it now has threads it helps. but more ppl dont know how to use it yet.

I use only primes with my DSLR so I don't mind the fixed focal length. My girlfriend, on the other hand, mocks me constantly with comments on zooming in on things and not being able to focus on things closer than 30cm (about 12 inches).

It doesn't have IS and focus is rather slow/poor in low light. I'm planning to bring it hiking up north where the sun never really sets during summer so it will likely not bother me. Especially since it's about two pounds lighter than bringing my DSLR as I did last year :)

    4 months ago by lemonad

  • jezlyn

@BUGabundo: My problem with Identica is that it's not different enough from Twitter for me to want to sign up for yet another service. FriendFeed is like Jaiku's predecessor, but for some reason none of the people I used to follow here want to use FriendFeed. So while there is a ton of activity going on over there, I miss people like @lemonad, @chibbigirl, @Bishop, @FyreFiend... I see them over on Twitter sometimes, but because of how Twitter works, obviously huge convo threads don't develop.

  • jezlyn

And I just got a "fail bird" page when I posted my previous comment, which shouldn't even be happening! GAH. Gladly most times this happens, the comment isn't lost. But I thought migration to Google servers was going to eliminate the damn bird...

    4 months ago by jezlyn

  • jezlyn

@lemonad: I don't normally shoot with primes (although I love using my 50mm wide open), so sometimes I do feel constrained by a single focal length. I sometimes feel constrained by the lack of reach my LX3 has, and it has 3x optical zoom. But shooting with the LX3 does have its major benefits compared to the bulk and conspicuous size of my DSLR.

Have you seen the Olympus E-P1? I totally want that DSLR. :)

    4 months ago by jezlyn

  • lemonad

@jezlyn: What I meant with Jaikuengine needing other things than Jaiku was more in the line of Jaiku perhaps not needing more users as much as Jaikuengine needing more separate installs. And Jaikuengine needing a way to seamlessly integrate those installs so that we can converse as well as we can today on Jaiku, but between jaikuengines (and other compliant platforms). You on your domain and I on mine. (Or something in that direction at least :)

    4 months ago by lemonad

  • lemonad

@jezlyn: My girlfriend has the LX3, which is why she mocks me. It's really a great camera.

I don't know what it is with the E-P1 that's making me not so interested in it. It looks great, is small, and has nice lenses but the photos seem to be a tad too... digital? I expect such a cute and fun camera to take funner photos somehow :)

    4 months ago by lemonad

  • jezlyn

I guess I understand that having multiple Jaikuengine installs talk to each other is a way to fix the whole "fail whale" issue that Twitter deals with, but I don't know if that's something people are going to want to deal with, unless you can make it drop-dead simple as creating a new registration on a service as you do today...

    4 months ago by jezlyn

  • jezlyn

Ah nice, she has the LX3! Great taste. :D

The different film-like features of the E-P1 that are similar to the "film modes" on the LX3 are what draw me to the E-P1, other than the fact that it's so small compared to other DSLRs. I can't remember ATM the other "fun" features the E-P1 has. I also love that an adapter for Nikon F-mount lenses is available (or will be?), so I can use the lenses I already have.

    4 months ago by jezlyn

  • adewale

@jezlyn: The adapted sounded really cool but according to this: http://nikonrumors.com/2009/07/14/announced-micro-four-thirds-adapter-for-the-f-mount.aspx it only does Carl Zeiss Voigtlander lenses. I only have Nikkor lenses.

I'll go back to wishing for a really good and cheap digital Leica.

    4 months ago by adewale

  • lemonad

@adewale: That cheap digital Leica is, in a sense, the LX3. Although owners of the D-Lux 4 would never admit to it :)

    4 months ago by lemonad

  • jezlyn

@adewale: Oh really? Hmmm, well, there are so many other lens adapters for the E-P1 that I'm fairly sure an F-mount adapter for Nikkor lenses can't be too far behind. @lemonad: Oh geeze, what is with the people who buy the Leica-branded versions of Panasonic Lumix cameras? They have more money than sense. :P

  • jezlyn

Hi, @topgold and @glas. :) @glas, I don't see you much on Twitter. Are you active online anymore?

    4 months ago by jezlyn

  • glas

Two reasons: One, I got this new job that keeps me from being as social online...probably a good thing; and two, most of my online social time is now done on Facebook. I check in on TwitKU now and again, but its dying a slow death and I don't have much desire to update it :-( How are you? I heard you lost your job. My wife did too. Tough job market.

    4 months ago by glas

  • jezlyn

Nooooooooo, not Facebook! Gah! :( Try FriendFeed?

Things are going alright, besides the whole losing my job thing. It really is a tough job market, especially since my only real experience is in C++. Hardly anyone wants that anymore. And those that do seem to want more expertise than what they see in me. Lame. I think that I would probably do pretty well in the financial firms that are hiring C++ engineers, but when they're so laser-focused on hearing about certain key skills or experience (that I apparently don't have), it's hard to get them to take a chance on me. GRRR.

  • glas

@BUG congrats! @Jez: Maybe you should learn C#.net. I would think that would be in demand.

    4 months ago by glas

  • jezlyn

Yes, if I learned C# I would probably look a bit more qualified, but I'm hesitant because part of me would like to move on to something other than programming, and part of me thinks that even though I learned some basics of C#, a lot of prospective employers might still be uncertain of my skills since I haven't had years of experience with it (in that case why bother?).

I'm toying with the idea of learning some Objective-C and programming for the iPhone. And maybe learning how to make apps for the Palm Pre. I feel like if I continue with programming I should do something that is more aligned with my interests. So we'll see.

  • glas

Phone apps do appear to be the next big thing.

    4 months ago by glas

  • topgold

I Jaiku had a mobile app for S60 and iPhone, there would be much more throughput here.

    4 months ago by topgold

  • arjw

Phone aps are the 'current' thing. You will want to look at doing more advanced web apps that work mobile

    4 months ago by arjw

  • jezlyn

@arjw, @glas Yeah, I just thought I'd start with iPhone apps, but I wouldn't limit myself to just the iPhone (if I get very far to begin with...very hard to work up motivation these days), especially with the impending tablet device from Apple. I'm just thinking in terms of learning to program for areas I'm personally interested in, instead of embedded products that people have no idea how to relate to. So many blank stares from family when I talked about my previous jobs. :P

@topgold: For sure! I hope someone makes a proper mobile app for Jaiku one both platforms. If I had any idea of where to begin, I'd try... But surely there are a lot more talented devs around here who could make it happen faster??

I'm so much in love with OperaMini and m-dots...

Especially when I have found a good solution for synchronize my work (Exhance) calendar and address book with my S60. I don't want to mess them with my personal stuff :-P.

@jezlyn @adewale @lemonad I feel the basic thing we need to gain momentum is an Android and Iphone app for jaiku/jaikuengine. With the way twitter clients and apps around, not having one mobile app for jaiku/jaikuengine is really create low mind share. I can support by providing an offshore resource if somebody can guide on this.

Other than to agree with the title I'll defer my comment on the existential crisis of Jaiku and mention that as far as lightweight cameras go, I also decided against the LX3 recently due to its lack of reach and the reputed limitations in the dynamic range of its out-of-camera jpegs. So I bought the Fujifilm Finepix F200EXR that had gotten such great reviews. And I hav to agree that it's a great littl cam for taking pictures during dusk and dawn when the sky can be unreasonably bright above a skyline or foliage.

When it comes to ISO sensitivity, the F200 is not that much different/better than my other pocket cam, the PowerShot A650IS, which is the "plastic" littl brother of Canon's G9, both of which hav a 1/1.6" sensor. I mean u can't go above ISO 400 without suffering from posterization artifacts.

Now that @mikie's back from holiday, perhaps we can convince him to pilot Jaiku Mobile for S60 through the Symbian approvals

  • jezlyn

@jkniiv: I guess I can see what you're saying about the dynamic range of the out-of-camera JPEGS of the LX3, but I'd counter that the ability to shoot RAW basically fixes that problem -- better ability to fix levels and shadow/highlight detail. However, in general I haven't had any glaring issues with the dynamic range on JPEGs. I just recently shot a bunch of panos with the LX3 and used the JPEGs instead of the RAW files for the final product (I usually shoot RAW+JPEG) and got great results. But yes, I agree that sometimes the zoom is limiting. High ISO performance from the LX3 is good, though. I often shoot on auto ISO and don't care if it chooses high ISO to minimize shutter speed. But then again, I'm not overly concerned about minimizing grain all the time.

Fuji is making a lot of very interesting Finepix cams. I saw a couple announced models recently that really piqued my interest. Like Ricoh and Panasonic it seems like Fuji is pushing tech to the limits to get some very cool features.
