Thanks, Everybody. I'm still wondering what my next step would be, but at the moment I'm trying not to think about it too much because I have a headache. :P I'm hoping I could get a job that's not in software engineering, since I'm a little burnt out from it. It'd be awesome if I could get some job that's more geared toward tech journalism/blogging, but we'll see how it goes. The biggest concern right now is how to get the finances in order so that when the severance runs out, we can still pay the bills. This is pretty awful timing for a layoff. :(
But forced change like that can bring great rewards. I lost my job 4 years ago (was hospitalised - bad if your an independent contractor).
Have you considered doing technical project-management instead
The burned-out feeling you get from working with software engineering strikes a chord, I took a break from the industry to teach troubled inner-city kids, that is extremely rewarding - now I'm back in ICT, and loving it because I have the greatest CEO in the world, but without that break I'd probably never gone back to ICT.
@kimbach: I don't think I have enough experience to be any kind of manager. I've never even reached lead engineer level at either of my previous jobs.
@cybette: I'd love to take a break, but I have this feeling like I have to get something else lined up soon. <<sigh>> But at the same time I feel like dragging my feet because I hate updating my resume and job searching. Talk about two of my least favorite things to do ever!

Not really an hour ago... Actually, it probably hasn't even been a half-hour yet. <<sigh>>

That's harsh! I've been there (back in Bubble 1.0) and I remember how this felt. What are you planning to do?
